GSA

The Gender and Sexuality Acceptance Club is a club for both straight and LGBTQ youth.  The purpose of the club is to promote a supportive environment for LGBTQ students in our school and beyond, and anyone who supports that mission is welcome.  The GSA at West was founded in the middle of the 2013-2014 school year, and in that first year did a variety of social and educational activities. Some of our social activities included a Christmas party, pizza and movie night, a group outing to a movie at Aksarben about a GSA, and the East GSA’s pool night.  We plan more such activities for next year.

We also did educational activities.  Most notably, we sponsored a conference for GSA’s in the area about LGBTQ issues with speakers from multiple LGBTQ organizations in the community.  We were very proud of the conference as, to the best of our knowledge, it was the first of its kind in the area, and we organized it during our first full semester as a club.  Last year, many of our members participated in the Day of Silence (a national event intended to draw attention to LGBTQ issues).  Next year we hope to do that again and also participate in Ally Week, where we will organize activities to help straight allies learn how to make the school more welcoming for LGBTQ students.

The club meets weekly.  During the 2013-2014 school year, meetings were Tuesdays from 3:25-4:15 PM in room 145.  At weekly meetings we talk about personal experiences and struggles, LGBTQ issues and history, and plan our events.  We made t-shirts last year and sold them to people within the school to raise awareness within the school.

The club provides leadership opportunities through officer positions and event-planning.  There are also a variety of community scholarships graduating students can apply to based on LGBTQ-supporting activities they have been involved in during high school.
