Cross Country

Thunderbird Cross Country is a fall sport for boys and girls that involves distance running and racing over a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). The season begins at the opening of school in August and runs until mid-October. Practice is held daily after school from 3:45 until approximately 5:30. Both boys and girls practice together under the direction of one head coach but they race separately.

There are no cuts in cross country so everyone remains on the team and there are no bench warmers...everyone competes. Both the varsity (top 7 runners) and junior varsity compete in a 10 meet schedule culminating with the State Cross Country Meet in Kearney. The T-Birds have had a number of state qualifying teams and individual state medalists over the years.

The program is directed by Leigh Officer.  While wanting to field the very best team to represent West, she strongly believes in turning his athletes in lifelong runners themselves by offering opportunities to run and compete throughout the calendar year.
